Release the Lease Activists Receive Neighborhood Hero Awards from Mayor Beutler
The Lincoln Neighborhood Alliance (LNA) awarded five individuals the 2009 Neighborhood Hero Award for their efforts to save their community grocery store at 48th and Leighton.

The award is sponsored annually by Lincoln Neighborhood Alliance and recognizes individuals, organizations or businesses that have made significant positive impacts on the neighborhoods of Lincoln. The awards were presented Saturday, Jan. 24, by Mayor Chris Beutler to Crystal Edwards, Pat Hensley, John Krejci, Diane Walkowiak and Larry Zink. The presentation took place during LNA's Talk to Our Elected Officials event at First United Methodist Church, 2723 N. 50th.

Heartland Pantry is Well Received in Neighborhood
The new Heartland Pantry has been busy since it opened in November. If you haven't stopped by yet, be sure to do so.

As reported in a December 22 Des Moines Register article about the Heartland Pantry, Supermarketguru.com has observed that the trend is towards "an era when people want less assortment" and "the average person goes shopping for 22 minutes." If that's the case, Heartland Pantry meets the needs of all those wanting quick "in and out" shopping without hiking around a huge store.

Release The Lease Committee Holds Last Meeting
The last meeting of UPCO's Release The Lease Committee was on Tuesday, December 9. It took place at 6:30 pm in the basement of the First United Methodist Church in University Place, following the UPCO Board Meeting.

The RTL committee first met on February 13, 2008 and was a major force behind pursuading Hy-Vee to keep a grocery store in the neighborhood.

Heartland Pantry is now open!

The November 18 ribbon cutting for Heartland Pantry was well attended. In addition to Mayor Beutler, City Coucilman Doug Emery, and representatives of UPCO, the Release The Lease group, and the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, there were dozens of shoppers.

The new store has a wide range of products and prices, and includes a Deals aisle that will have very low prices on a constantly rotating variety of items. All your basic needs are in the store: canned goods, packaged meats, fresh produce, frozen goods, a candy section, wine and spirits, dry goods, greeting cards, and a small floral area.

November 18 is Opening Date for New Store

The new Heartland Pantry is scheduled to open November 18. The tentative time for the ribbon cutting is 10 a.m. at the store. Everyone is welcome to attend, so be there and show your support!

This will be a welcomed event in University Place. Add it to your list of things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving! Click on our new Heartland Pantry tab to see pictures of the inside of the 27,000 sq. foot store.

The new store manager is John Diaz, who most recently was the drug store director at the Newton, Iowa Hy-Vee. The phone number for the Heartland Pantry is 467-5506. The store hours will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., 7 days a week.

Heartland Pantry celebrates its first anniversary!!

A special ceremony took place at the store on Saturday, November 21, 2009. Speakers included Mayor Chris Beutler, City Councilman Doug Emery, UPCO President Malinda Burk, and Heartland Pantry store director John Diaz.

Thank you everyone for your efforts!
Community activism makes a difference!
The letters, emails, petitions, and publicity made a difference.
Never forget that YOU made it happen - without your efforts
University Place would have a large empty building and
a struggling strip mall at 48th & Leighton.
